The truth is, Job never received an answer as to why he suffered. A good question to ask ourselves is whether we are working more productively and beautifully. A second and related theme concerns proving the character of God to men.
His wife encourages him to curse God and to give up and die, but Job refuses, struggling to accept his circumstances. The Bible begins and ends with a revelation of God that gives redemption its basis.
It is apparent from the Book of Genesis that God seeks to bless mankind, but such blessing is not unconditional for God does not tolerate disobedience and unbelief. In practice it may be hard to know exactly where the line is, and it must be admitted that Christians have often erred on the side of conformity, legalism, prejudice, and a stifling dreariness, especially when proclaiming what other people should or should not do.
Nature of the covenant It is theologically significant that in Genesis 15 only God walked between the pieces, not Abraham.
The Book of Job has many purposes. There can be no higher authority than the One who speaks and brings into existence what did not exist before except as a concept within His own understanding.
Their arrogance angers God, who destroys the edifice. More significant is the revelation that God makes an unconditional covenant with Abraham promising to bless him and his descendants Gen In essence, the whole of the Bible from Genesis 3: In making that tree, God opened up the possibility of evil, but in doing so God validated choice.
But that plan did not include all mankind. Most conservative scholars are agreed that the patriarchal age is indicated as the likeliest setting for the events, because Job, the father, acts as priest for the family, and because there is no mention of the tabernacle, temple, law, or national institutions.
Genesis also is clear that God created man, and that He created man in His own image. New Testament writers directly quote Job twice Rom.
Thus in the creation order man stands over the rest of creation. If we give ourselves fully to God in those moments, we will obtain keepsakes of Him to treasure now and forever. The believer in the midst of suffering should not abandon God, but draw near to Him, so out of the fellowship can come the comfort, without the explanation; and 6.
But there will always be a good ending.
However, all that changed with the Fall. In this regard it is important to note the relation of obedience to the Abrahamic Covenant.
Believers talk about trusting in the Lord with their whole heart and refusing to lean on their own understanding. We cannot even provide for our own maintenance. Christ spoke of this relationship in clear and certain terms in His so—called high priestly prayer. Thus when God informs Adam that if he disobeyed His command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he would surely die, He had in mind not only physical death, which did not immediately occur, but spiritual death which did occur immediately and which can be understood broadly as separation from God.
A key to understanding the first theme of the book is to notice the debate between God and Satan in heaven and how it connects with the 3 cycles of earthly debates between Job and his friends. Satan appears in heaven again, and God grants him another chance to test Job. Blessing A major theological theme introduced in Genesis is that of blessing.
The next part of the command given to Adam——"subdue it the earth " and "rule over the fish," and so forth——is, however, radically different in its Noahic form because now the earth was cursed and alienation had fractured the harmonious structures of sovereignty that had attended the pre—Fall creation.
Thus on the grand scheme of the Bible as a whole, God is at work at restoring man to a right relationship with Him.Get a fresh perspective on a timeless story with IFWE’s new study, God’s Purpose in Creation: A Study of Genesis 1.
