Nately was trying to stop Yossarian from shooting some men playing a prank by firing machine guns. In Heller married Shirley Held. Yossarian remembers such a discussion with his roommate, Orr. It says so, in the text of Catch At the end of the book he deserts and heads for Sweden. I thought he was very comical as were many of the other characters so I enjoyed the first few chapters.
On a later mission, Yossarian is hit by flak and sent to the hospital legitimately. Finally, she falls in love with Nately, but he is killed on his very next mission. Then he learns that Doc Daneeka was also on the plane and raises the number to seventy.
But, a mix up happens and the private he switched places with as a joke, is sent home in his place. Because of this he flees to Rome where he is unable to find a whore he previously fell in love with.
